Toyota Yaris: Stop And Start System / Check Mode Procedure
CHECK MODE PROCEDURE
HINT:
Compared to normal mode, check mode is more sensitive to malfunctions. Therefore, check mode can detect malfunctions that cannot be detected in normal mode.
NOTICE:
All the stored DTCs and freeze frame data are cleared if: 1) the engine stop and start ECU is switched from normal mode to check mode or vice versa; or 2) the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or off while in check mode. Before changing modes, always check for and note any DTCs and freeze frame data.
CHECK MODE PROCEDURE
(a) Check and ensure the following conditions:
(1) Auxiliary battery voltage is 11 V or higher.
(2) Shift lever is in neutral.
(3) A/C switch is off.
(b) Turn the ignition switch off.
(c) Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
(d) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(e) Turn the GTS on.
(f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Stop and Start / Utility / Check Mode.
Powertrain > Stop and Start > Utility
Tester Display |
Check Mode |
(g) Switch the engine stop and start ECU from normal mode to check mode.
(h) Check that the stop and start indicator flashes as shown in the illustration.
(i) Start the engine.
(j) Check that the stop and start indicator turns off.
(k) Simulate the conditions of the malfunction described by the customer.
(l) Check for DTCs and freeze frame data using the GTS.
FREEZE FRAME DATA DESCRIPTION The engine stop and start ECU records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored...
FAIL-SAFE CHART If any of the following DTCs are stored, the engine stop and start ECU enters fail-safe mode to preserve vehicle operability. DTC Component Fail-safe Operation Fail-safe Deactivation Condition P033562 Open in engine speed signal circuit
Stop and start control is prohibited
Engine is automatically restarted if a DTC is stored while the engine is stopped by stop and start control
All of the following conditions are met for 10 seconds:
Normal communication with ECM
Engine speed 500 rpm or higher
Engine speed (communication signal) 500 rpm or higher
Difference between engine speed from pulse signal and engine speed from communication signal is less than 100 rpm

Brake booster assembly
Vacuum hose (brake booster hose)
Stop and start control is prohibited
Engine is automatically restarted if a DTC is stored while the engine is stopped by stop and start control
One of the following conditions is met:
Vacuum changes while the brake pedal is depressed
Vacuum changes a specified number of times while the vehicle is being driven faster than a certain vehicle speed
P055511 P055515 Vacuum sensor assembly circuit
Stop and start control is prohibited

FREEZE FRAME DATA FREEZE FRAME DATA (a) Using the GTS, check the vehicle condition (ECU, sensor) when the brake system operates or a DTC is output. CHECK FREEZE FRAME DATA WHEN DTC WAS STORED HINT:
Freeze frame data is stored when a DTC is output.
Once freeze frame data is stored when a DTC is output, it is not updated or cleared until the DTC is cleared...
TERMINALS OF ECU NOTICE:
DTCs may be output when connectors are disconnected during inspection. Therefore, be sure to clear the DTCs using the GTS once the inspection has been completed.
Do not apply excessive force to the forward recognition camera connector...
